Pawleys Island, SC – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team was solid and consistent in the second round of the Golfweek Program Challenge, Monday, at the True Blue Golf Club.
The Govs had just one under-par score (senior Tyler Phillips shot 1-under 71) but no one shot above 74 as they carded a 2-over 290 for a 573 total.
The Govs continue to lead the four Ohio Valley Conference schools competing, Tennessee Tech is in 10th place at 580, followed by Jacksonville State (12th/583) and Morehead State (18th/609) in the 18-team field.
How consistent were the Governors, Tuesday? Despite a morning of steady rain, they had 13 birdies and 13 bogeys. A pair of double bogeys left them 2-over par.
“Although we didn’t score as well as we would have liked, I thought we gave ourselves some good chances,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “I thought when we made the turn that we might get some good opportunities, but we just could not get putts to fall.”
Phillips, perhaps playing his best round of golf as a Gov, really settled down on the back nine after three birdies and four bogeys left him 1-over. He birdied Nos. 13 and 17 on the back side while shooting par on the other seven holes to finish at 1-under for the day.
Fellow senior Austin Kramer had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and then shot par on each of the final 9 holes for an even-par 72.
Coming off his 68, Sunday, first-year sophomore Alex Rios made the turn at 2-under with a trio of birdies and one bogey. But he had a trio of bogeys on the back to finish at 1-over 73.
Junior Erik Hedberg overcame a 3-over front side, hampered by two double bogeys, to shoot a 1-under on the back nine to finish at 2-over 74, the same score as senior Chris Baker, who could not get putts to drop all day as evidence by his one birdie as opposed to three bogeys.
“Tyler had a good back nine as did Erik,” Wilson said. “Kramer just played solid golf all day.”
The 18-tournament will crown men and women’s champions, Tuesday, with an overall combined titleholder also being crowned. Follow tourney results at www.golfstat.com
