Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s women’s basketball team rallied from six-points down in the second half to force overtime in its Ohio Valley Conference contest versus Belmont, Wednesday night at the Dunn Center, but the Bruins outscored the Lady Govs 17-4 in the extra five minutes of play to come away with a 71-58 victory.
The Lady Govs (7-20, 2-13 OVC) trailed Belmont 42-36, with 9:08 left in the game – the largest lead by the Bruins in regulation – but freshman Tiasha Gray scored nine of her team-high 22 points in the last 6:34 of regulation, including the game-tying goal with 38 seconds left to tie the game 54-54 and force overtime.Austin Peay had the final shot in regulation, after forcing a Belmont turnover, but Gray’s final shot was off the mark.
But the five minutes of overtime wasn’t as kind, as Austin Peay only managed one field goal and four total points in the extra period, while Belmont hit 12-of-13 free throws in scoring 17 points to pull away for the 13-point win.
Belmont (16-12, 10-5 OVC) scored the first three points of overtime, with Austin Peay getting back to one point on its only field goal in the overtime scored by Austin Peay, which came from senior Meghan Bussabarger.
The field goal gave her 20 points on the night and allowed her to become the 16th player in school history to reach the 1,000 point mark.
The Bruins would put the game away by scoring the next seven points, to take a 64-56 lead with 1:02 left.
Senior Leslie Martinez hit one-of-two free throws with a minute left to end the Belmont run, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way, with the Bruins closed out the final 60 seconds by outscoring the Lady Govs 7-1 for the 71-58 final.
Austin Peay opened the game on fire, as it jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the game’s first 6:29, and built the lead out to as many as 12 points, 22-10, with 8:36 to go before intermission.
But Molly Ernst came off the bench to score 11 points for Belmont and help them rally to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Ernst would finish with a game-high 25 points, the only Bruin to reach double figures.
In the second half, the two teams exchanged the lead four times over the first 9:29, before seeing Belmont get out to a six-point lead.
