APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Gulf Shores, AL – A week ago when Austin Peay State University women’s golf team shot a 320, Lady Govs’ coach Sara Robson was displeased. This week the Lady Govs’ 321 score was acceptable.
In fact, the Lady Govs’ opening round 321 has them tied for fourth place after the opening round of the UAB Beach Blast, being played on the par-72, 6,050-yard Cypress/Marsh Course at the Peninsula and Racquet Club. The Lady Govs are tied with Emory Riddle in fourth. Southern Miss leads the nine-team event after shooting a 305, Host UAB is a distant second at 317, followed by Houston Baptist at 318.
“A 320 today was a lot different than last week (at Old Fort in Murfreesboro, TN),” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Today the course was very windy and the greens played really difficult.
“At the same time we missed 10 putts from five feet and we had seven penalty shots. We played well, but we left some shots out there.”
Freshman Jessica Cathey continued her strong fall by carding a 78, leaving her in tie for sixth place. It was her fourth straight sub-80 round.
A trio of Lady Govs-seniors Lauren Bond and Tabitha Beard along with junior Tala Mumford-are tied for 17th after shooting 81s, respectively. Sophomore Meghan Mueller was at 84 while senior Holly Batey, playing as an individual, shot an 85.
The tourney’s final round-and the Lady Govs final fall round-will be played Tuesday.
