APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Tennis
Clarksville, TN – A slow start in doubles cost Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team a 4-3 decision to Alabama-Birmingham, Sunday, at the Governors Tennis Center.
The Blazers swept the doubles competition, split the singles matches and ultimately took home a win.
“They came out ready to go and we just weren’t,” Govs head coach Malik Tabet said. “We have some major improvements to be made on the doubles side and today it cost us the match. Give UAB credit, they played good tennis all the way around today.”Austin Peay got singles wins from the three returners, Sunday, while three finish who make up the middle of the lineup all dropped straight-set losses. Sophomore Jasmine Ademovic won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and John Storie used a tiebreak at No. 6.
The Govs other win was in come-from-behind fashion – demonstrating a learned ability to make adjustments within a match.
Junior Sean Bailey dropped his first set, but settled into a rhythm to finish out the match with a win.
“We’ve seen some major improvements and I believe there are many more to come,” Tabet said. “Jasmin, Sean and John have all bought into what we’re trying to do. Once we get our freshmen on board, we’re going to be okay.”
Austin Peay returns to action, February 17th, at Southern Illinois.
