APSU Men’s Tennis defeats Oakland City, Brescia

APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityEvansville, IN – For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s tennis team opened the season 2-0 after defeating Oakland City 6-1 and sweeping Brescia, 7-0, Saturday, at the Evansville Tennis Center.

Austin Peay (2-0) swept doubles against Oakland City. A mainstay doubles tandem in the Govs’ lineup since their freshmen year, juniors Tom Bolton and Giovanni Becchis then won a 7-5 match from the No. 2 court, and Javier Tortajada and Bodi van Galen won 6-2 in the final spot. 

All six of the APSU Govs’ singles wins against the Mighty Oaks came in straight sets, with Sota Minami and Becchis winning from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. 

Bolton earned a 6-3, 6-4 win from the No. 4 court, while Tortajada claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win from court five. Glen Arnet then claimed his first-career spring win to wrap up the Govs’ Friday wins in a 6-2, 6-4 victory from the No. 6 position. 

It was a clean sweep for the APSU Govs against the Bearcats, with none of the doubles pairing allowing more than three points, and all the singles wins coming in straight sets. 

Minami and Aeneas Schaub won 6-1 from court one in doubles, while Becchis and Bolton in addition to van Galen and Tortajada winning 6-0, 6-3 from the final two positions, respectively, to clinch the day’s first point for APSU.

Both Becchis and Schaub won a pair of 6-0 sets to conclude their day, while Bolton allowed just one point in his win from No. 4 singles.

After sweeping his first set, Tortajada then won a 6-3 second set to secure his win from court No. 5.

Minami – from the No. 1 position – and Arnet – from court six – combined to allow just five points in their wins against Brescia.
