Clarksville, TN – Sophomore midfielder Kasidy Schenk netted her first-career goal in Austin Peay State University (APSU) soccer team’s season opener; however, the Governors dropped a 2-1 match to UT Martin, Thursday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
UT Martin (1-0) scored in the 10th minute on their first of 10 shot attempts of the evening. Austin Peay (0-1) answered back eight minutes later on Schenk’s unassisted goal to tie the match at one apiece.
Despite a trio of shots on goal by Aniyah Mack, Alec Baumgardt, and Lindsey McMahon, the score stayed even at one entering halftime.
Mack and Baumgardt led APSU in attempts at halftime, both tallying a pair. Mack, who was one of four Governors to make their collegiate debut in Thursday’s affair, also led the team with two shots on net in the opening 45.
The Skyhawks again scored on their first shot of the half following the break, as UTM midfielder Makayla Robinson netted her second goal of the night less than 30 seconds into the half.
After an attempt by Baumgardt sailed high of the crossbar in the 48th minute, UTM recorded three-straight shots before Mack added her third of the match in the 62nd minute.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Bahn, earning her first-career start, saved her third shot of the match following an attempt by UTM’s Peyton Cook in the 74th minute.
Despite four attempts by the APSU Govs in the final 15 minutes, Austin Peay State University was unable to answer the Skyhawks’ early second-half goal, and dropped their season opener, 2-1.
