Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) football team, the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion, will play five home games during an 11-game schedule in 2020, the athletics department announced Monday.
The Governors begin the season with the 2020 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff against Central Arkansas, August 29th, released Tuesday.
Austin Peay State University then travels to Cincinnati for the seventh meeting between the two teams, September 5th. The APSU Govs pushed the Bearcats to the limit in their last meeting, before falling 26-14 in 2017.
Austin Peay State University opens its home schedule with its OVC-opening affair against UT Martin, September 12th. It will be the Govs earliest conference opener since a September 10th, 2016 contest against Tennessee Tech. Austin Peay State University and UT Martin have split the last four meetings in the series with the home team winning each time, including APSU’s 38-24 victory in Clarksville last season.
After the first of two bye weeks in the 2020 schedule, the Governors host East Tennessee in a September 26th contest. It will be the Buccaneers’ first trip to Clarksville since 1977 – their final year ETSU was a member of the OVC. The Govs will seek to exact a measure of revenge against the Bucs, who won a 20-14 contest in Johnson City last season.
An October 3rd contest at Eastern Illinois begins a closing stretch of seven consecutive OVC games. Austin Peay State University will look for its first win in Charleston since 2008 after posting a dominating victory against the Panthers in Clarksville last season.
Austin Peay then hosts Eastern Kentucky, October 10th, and will look to snap the Colonels hold at Fortera Stadium. The Govs have not defeated the Colonels in two tries since the opening of Fortera Stadium and are seeking their first home win against EKU since 2011.
A tough stretch of OVC tests continues the following week when the Governors head to Jacksonville State for an October 17th matchup. Austin Peay State University manhandled Jacksonville State in their 2019 meeting at Fortera Stadium and will seek to build on that victory in their trip to Burgess-Snow Field. A win in Jacksonville would be the Govs first since 1979.
The APSU Govs’ 2020 Homecoming game will feature a visit from Tennessee State, November 7th. It is another revenge game for Austin Peay State University, which suffered its lone OVC loss at the hands of the Tigers last season. Austin Peay State University is 6-5 at home against Tennessee State all time, including an impressive 49-34 win in the 2018 meeting between the teams.
Austin Peay State University closes the road portion of its schedule with a November 14th trip to Tennessee Tech. The Govs steamrolled the Golden Eagles, 58-21, in Cookeville last season in the first of seven consecutive victories that carried APSU into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I Football Championship.
An old rival will visit Clarksville to close out the 2019 regular-season schedule – as Murray State returns to Fortera Stadium November 21st for the First Financial Battle of the Border. The APSU Govs have dominated the series with the Racers recently, winning each of the last three games by at least a two-touchdown margin.
The 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship begins the following weekend, November 28th, with opening-round action at eight campus sites.
