Madison, IL – A final-round surge by Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s golf senior Austin Lancaster and steadier play up and down the board allowed the Governors to move all the way up into a tie for eighth overall at the Derek Dolenc Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Gateway National Golf LInks.
Austin Peay State University’s final-round 291 tied the Govs with Belmont for the fifth-best final-round score. It helped the Govs tie Weber State for eighth at 885.
UT Martin (852) won the event, with Tennessee Tech, Belmont, Drake and Loyola Chicago rounding out the top-five in the event.
A three-under 68 made Lancaster the big mover for the Govs on the final day. The Hendersonville Tennessee native moved all the way up into tie for 13th at 215 (73-74-68), capitalizing on his momentum to sink one of seven birdies on the treacherous par-4 No. 15 during the final round. The par-4 holes are where Lancaster did much of his damage during the tournament; he was one of 11 players in the field to average par or better for the event on par-4 holes.
Senior Michael Busse was briefly tied for second early on the final day, but four straight bogeys to close the front nine conspired to bump him to 21st at 217 (69-71-77); he led the Govs and tied for ninth among all competitors with 37 pars. Freshman Tate Dickerson, whose work on par-3 holes (2.75/hole) was among the best in the tournament, tied for 41st (78-71-74—223).
Junior Chase Korte (81-77-77—235; t-85th) and senior Alex Vegh (84-84-72—240; 96th) rounded out the day for the Govs. Vegh’s 72 has him averaging 71.0 in the third round so far in 2019-20.
The APSU Govs look to bounce back next week at the JT Poston Invitational—Western Carolina’s home event formerly known as the Hummingbird Invitational—in Sapphire Valley, North Carolina.
