Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Municipal Properties project manager David Smith has been selected as Interim Director at the Clarksville Building and Codes Department, Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts announced Monday, June 24th, 2019.
In April, Mike Baker, Building and Codes Director since 2012, announced he will retire from the post June 30th after 20 years with the department.
Smith, 39, also will continue his duties as Project Manager, a position he has held since 2017, while a search is conducted for a new Building and Codes Director.
Smith has held several positions with the City since joining the staff in 2005. He was Deputy Building Official from 2005 to 2009, and then served as Parking Manager from 2009 to 2017.
Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Management from Austin Peay State University.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to manage this important department, ” Smith said. “We’re a fast-growing market, with a very active construction industry, so this is really exciting work.”
The search for a Building and Codes Director will get under way soon. The applicants will be evaluated by a search committee headed by Chief of Staff James Halford and Human Resources Director Will Wyatt. Top candidates will be forwarded to Mayor Pitts for another round of evaluation and interviews. The Mayor will recommend his choice for ratification by the City Council.
“David has strong experience managing building projects and our parking operations, plus he is familiar with Building & Codes operations from his time as Deputy Building Official,” Clarksville Mayor Pitts said. “He’s well prepared to keep the department moving forward.”
The Clarksville Building and Codes Department is responsible for quality construction and orderly development through code and zoning enforcement, issuing various permits, inspections and abatement.
