Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team hits the long road to Southern Methodist University to compete in the SMU Invitational, Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th in Dallas, Texas.
The Govs last played at their home tournament in early September, but Lidia Yanes Garcia made the trek to Malibu, CA to play in the prestigious ITA Oracle Masters a couple weeks ago.
Yanes Garcia made it to the semifinals of the consolation draw in singles, her best showing in the three years she attended the tournament. Yanes Garcia also won the Singles Flight A competition at the APSU Fall Invitational, the second time she has won the event.
The Govs had three of four players advance in the Singles Flight A competition of the home tourney, with Yanes Garcia, defending Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Fabienne Schmidt, and newcomer Tatiana Lopez qualifying. Schmidt defeated Lopez before narrowly falling to Yanes Garcia in the final.
Other standout performances from the Govs’ home tournament included second-team All-OVC honoree Helena Kuppig reaching the semifinals of the Singles Flight B main draw and a pair of Govs doubles teams advance to the final of Flight A doubles.
