APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s soccer team looks to get back on track with a pair of matches this weekend, traveling to Mercer for a 6:00pm kickoff, Friday, September 7th and then returning home to host Chattanooga, 1:00pm, Sunday, September 9th.

The Govs got off to a flying start, winning their first three matches by a combined 8-0, but were brought back down to earth after falling to Little Rock (3-1) and Mississippi State on the road (4-0).

Despite the results, the team still worked extremely hard and simply did not have the ball go in, particularly against Little Rock. The Govs actually had more shots on goal than the Trojans, but only got on the score sheet when the game was already 3-0.

Another bright spot was the performance of sophomore midfielder Katie Kenward, who scored her first career goal for the Govs against Little Rock and then started her first game of the season against Mississippi State.

Opponent Spotlight

Mercer, the first opponent for the Govs, has had some mixed results to start the season. The Bears won their first three games by a combined 14-1, but are only a meager 1-2-1 since, including a 2-1 loss to Presbyterian in their most recent outing.

Most of the attacking play is filtering through Abigail Zoeller and Sarah Adcock. Zoeller leads the team with four goals to go along with two assists while Adcock is the assist leader with three and also has two goals to her name. The meeting between the Govs and the Bears is also the first ever between the two programs.

The Govs return to Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to take on a familiar opponent in Chattanooga. The Mocs have lost their last two matches falling at home to Georgia State in double overtime (2-1) and Lipscomb on the road (3-0). The Mocs have played one common opponent in Alabama A&M. The Govs defeated the Bulldogs 4-0, while Chattanooga also won by a score of 3-0.

Austin Peay will be focusing on stopping Chloe Arnold, who leads the Mocs with five goals in six games this season. Up until last season, the Govs had won seven straight against the Mocs, but Chattanooga defeated the Govs last year, 3-2. Renee Semaan had a goal from a McKenzie Dixon corner in last season’s meeting as well.

Mercer will be providing live stats for fans to follow along. The live stats link can be accessed on the women’s soccer schedule on letsgopeay.com.

For the home match against Chattanooga, the game will have live stats and will be broadcast on the OVC Digital Network. Admission, like all other home soccer matches, is free.
