Tempe, AZ – Austin Peay State University’s Lidia Yanes Garcia and the APSU women’s tennis team were recognized with two regional awards the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced, Wednesday.
The women’s team had finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament this year, after a 12-win season and rolling through the conference tournament downing UT Martin and OVC rivals Murray State, before falling just short in the Championship round against Eastern Kentucky.
The Govs wrap up a tremendous season with two regional accolades.
Lidia Yanes Garcia added to her ever-growing list of accolades at Austin Peay with the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Awards for the Ohio Valley region. The award recognizes athletes for their pursuit of excellence on and off the court, in all aspects of the game.
This regional recognition caps off an incredible junior year for Yanes Garcia that already included her third Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honor, All-OVC First Team selection, as well as several academic awards. Yanes Garcia looks ahead to her senior season, as one of the most decorated tennis players in Austin Peay history.
The women’s tennis team also won regional recognition with the ITA Ohio Valley Region Community Service Award, which recognizes the Govs relentless effort no only on the court and in the classroom, but in the Austin Peay community as well.
