APSU Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team continues their seven-match roadtrip with an 11:00am, Friday, February 9th contest against Southern Indiana and then a 5:00pm, Saturday, February 10th match at Vanderbilt.
The Govs (0-4) look to bounce back after losses against two quality opponents this past weekend. Austin Peay have been competitive in a lot of matches this season, but have been highly unlucky, having a 1-3 team record in three-set matches, with the lone win from senior Aleh Drobysh.
The Govs also have a 0-4 tiebreaker record this season, but Drobysh did win his three-setter, despite losing the tiebreaker in the same match.
Opponent Spotlight
Southern Indiana (3-0) brings an unblemished record into the Govs’ first contest of the weekend. However, Austin Peay has won three of the past four meetings against the Screaming Eagles. In addition, Almantas Ozelis, the Govs’ No.1 singles player, has never lost a match (singles or doubles) against a Southern Indiana opponent. Southern Indiana’s strength this season has been in doubles, compiling an 8-1 team record this season.
Southeastern Conference-member Vanderbilt (4-2) will be a stern test for the Govs. The Commodores have knocked off two common opponents this year, defeating Middle Tennessee 4-3 and then making quick work of Lipscomb, 6-1. The Commodores also have one player, Daniel Valent, ranked at #50 in the ITA’s Top 125 for singles.
