Clarksville, TN – On Senior Day at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field, Sunday, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team defeated Alabama A&M, 2-0.
Before the contest, five players – Brianna Avitabile, Gina Fabbro, Mary Ruth Locastro, Natalie Smith and Nicole Wojcik – were honored for their accomplishments at Austin Peay. Each of the five attempted at least one shot, but it was Locastro’s first try in the 12th minute which proved to be the difference.
The Govs (4-3) drew a foul at the top right corner of the box, setting up a free kick for freshman Renee Semaan. Semaan sent a cross into a crowd, where two shots were blocked before the goal was scored. Initially, Fabbro got her foot to the ball, but the follow-up deflected off Locastro to become her goal, officially. The final shot totals for both teams were identical in each half, with the Governors holding a 20-6 edge in the end. Of the 16 field players who entered the match for APSU, 12 of them finished with at least one shot.
In the 64th minute, Austin Peay padded their lead after tuning up the tempo on the Alabama A&M side of the pitch. Freshman Melody Fisher played a ball out wide to Fabbro, who looked inside before sending it across to her left. On the other end was sophomore Jennifer Smith, who tapped the ball into the net from close range. It’s the second goal of the season for Smith.
Freshman Mary Parker Powell earned the victory in goal after starting the match, improving her record to 2-3. At halftime, junior Lindsey Todd entered for the final 45 minutes and made two saves.
Austin Peay makes its longest road trip of 2016, 7:00pm, Friday, as the Govs fly to TCU for their first ever meeting.
