Pinehurst, NC – With senior Chris Baker leading the way, Friday, Austin Peay State University’s golf team was in third place after shooting 293 on Day 1 of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, being played at the 6,937-yard, par-71 Pinehurst No. 8.
Baker shot an even-par 71, with birdie and one bogey to go with 16 pars during a solid Friday round. He is tied for third overall.
But Baker received plenty of help. Junior Erik Hedberg recorded a 2-over 73 (tied for ninth), followed by senior Austin Kramer‘s 74 and sophomore Justin Arens‘ 75. Senior Tyler Phillips ended with a 78.“We had a lot of positives today during our first round,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson. “I think our guys understand progress takes time.
“Individually, Baker played a very steady round. He worked hard on his swing this winter and spring and now we are starting to see good results.”
The Govs will go into Saturday five shots off the pace set by Xavier (288), with Elon second at 292, one shot ahead of the Govs.
“Tomorrow we will be playing with the leaders,” Wilson said, “but the focus will still be just on doing the small things right and improving every day.”
Three other Ohio Valley Conference golf teams also are among the competition at Pinehurst—Belmont (297/t4th), Morehead State (302/7th) and Eastern Kentucky (304/8th).
The 54-hole tourney will resume Saturday and conclude with the final 18 holes, Sunday.
