Clarksville, TN – Seeking to regain some of its pre-Christmas momentum, Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team will close out the 2015 schedule and non-conference action, 7:00pm, Wednesday, by playing host to Westminster College in Dave Aaron Arena.
The Governors come into the contest after a 74-70 defeat at home to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Monday night.
It ended a modest two-game win streak while also ending the Govs’ hopes to enter Saturday’s Ohio Valley Conference opener against Eastern Kentucky with a winning mark. The Governors stand at 6-8 preparing for their 15th and final non-league contest.
After shooting almost 60 percent in its two previous games, the Govs displayed offensive inefficiency Monday night, reminiscent of that displayed at IPFW and North Florida, let alone the second half of the previous Texas A&M-Corpus Christi matchup.
The Govs shot just 40 percent (23 of 57) from the floor, including 3-of-15 from three-point range, while committing 10 turnovers. The lack of ball movement also resulted in only nine assists. It was the sixth time this season the Govs were limited to single-digit assist numbers.
Senior center Chris Horton will attempt to get back on track against Westminster after watching his double-double streak end at 11 games, largely due to first-half foul troubles. The 6-8 post player sat for the final 10:41 of the opening half—APSU was outscored 25-15 during that span as a five-point lead became a five-point deficit. Horton finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, seven coming in the final half.
Senior forward Khalil Davis was one of the few Monday bright spots. He finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, picking up some of slack created by Horton’s absence. It was Davis’ third career double-double, but first this season.
Junior forward Kenny Jones also enjoyed a solid performance, scoring double digits (10 points) for the first time in seven games. Jones was 5-of-8 from the floor while also snaring seven rebounds.
Westminster, a Division III program from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, comes to Clarksville on the second-day of a two-day road swing that took them to Louisville, Tuesday, to play Oglethorpe (GA). The Blue Jays owned a 3-3 pre-Christmas mark. Guard Tanner Cochran averaged 17.1 points per game prior to the break.
