Crowd of 10,373 Helps Nashville Record Back-To-Back Sellouts For First Time Since 2005
Nashville, TN – In front of 10,373 fans, the Sounds collected just four hits and were shutout, as Round Rock stole the second game of the series at First Tennessee Park on Saturday night, 1-0.
Pairing last night’s occupancy of 10,111 with Saturday night’s crowd marked the first back-to-back sellouts that the Sounds have had since the 2005 season (August 19th-20th).
Overall, it was the third time that First Tennessee Park has hosted a sellout crowd through the first 14 games after doing so just twice all of last season.
After struggling to begin the year, Nashville’s starting pitching staff has been terrific, and Saturday night was no different.Arnold Leon came into the matchup with favorable career numbers against the Express (2-0, 0.69), and the dominance continued. He notched his second consecutive quality start with 6.0 innings, five hits, one run and one walk. Leon also tied a staff season-high by fanning nine batters (Chris Bassitt, April 14th at OKC).
Round Rock plated the only run off Leon in the sixth courtesy of a Rock Shoulders’ blast over the right field wall. The right-hander labored a bit through the frame, but escaped a bases loaded jam and struck out the side to keep thing close.
Sean Nolin made his second rehab outing for Nashville in relief of Leon and threw 2.0 scoreless frames with no runs and a strikeout. Ryan Verdugo walked a pair but worked his way out of the ninth with no damage.
Craig Gentry batted in the leadoff position for the third game since joining the Sounds and collected the team’s only multi-hit performance. All four hits from Nashville were singles, as Andy Parrino and Kent Matthes joined Gentry as the only other Sounds’ batters to notch a base hit. Nashville never got a batter past first base and it was the second time this homestand that Nashville has been blanked.
The Sounds and Express will battle in the 2:05pm contest Sunday afternoon. Lefty Barry Zito (0-3, 5.74) will be trying to record his first win of the season and is scheduled to be opposed by Round Rock’s Jerad Eickhoff.
