Gulf Shores, AL – For the second straight week, Austin Peay State University junior golfer Jessica Cathey will head to the final round of a golf tournament tied for second.
Cathey shot a 1-under 71, Monday, in the opening round of the UAB Fall Beach Blast, one shot off the lead of Sam Houston State’s Alisa White.
The tourney is being played on the par-72 6170-yard courses Cypress and Marsh at Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.Unfortunately, for Cathey and APSU, no other Lady Govs cracked the Top 30. As a result, the Lady Govs sit in 10th place after the opening round, despite shooting 308 on the day.
“I was very proud Jessica today,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “She played solid and steady golf all day long. She has really played good golf this fall.”
Freshman AnnaMichelle Moore and sophomore Amber Bosworth each shots 78s while senior Meghan Mueller had an 81. Sophomore Morgan Kauffman struggled to an 87.
“AnnaMichelle played well today—she just had one bad hole,” Robson said. “Amber grinded all day while Meghan’s short game was spot on, but she just had a few bad swings that cost her greatly.”
The Lady Govs will play their final fall round Tuesday. Robson hopes the Lady Govs take momentum into the offseason.
“We need to play more aggressive tomorrow and hit more greens,” Robson said.
