Clarksville, TN – Games against Tennessee and Memphis highlight the 2015 Austin Peay State University’s baseball team’s schedule, announced Wednesday.
The Govs, who play a November 1st scrimmage against Tennessee, will face the Volunteers during the regular season with a 5:00pm contest on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th). Nearly one month later, Memphis will visit Raymond C. Hand Park for the first time since 2007 with an April 14th contest.
Austin Peay will begin its 2015 campaign with the first of two home tournaments – the Governors Challenge, February 13th-15th, with Niagara, Northern Illinois and South Dakota visiting Clarksville. The Govs Week 3 action will have them hosting the Governors Classic, February 27th-March 1st, and facing Dayton, Northern Kentucky and Western Michigan.
In between those two home tournaments, the Govs will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, in Week 2 to face Samford for the first time since 2008 when the two squads were members of the Ohio Valley Conference.
“Our non conference schedule will provide us with different tests throughout the year,” said Govs head coach Gary McClure. “Obviously, Memphis and Tennessee will stick out to our fans because those are big-name programs. However, I believe we get as much a challenge from any of the other teams we play outside of our conference.
The Govs begin Ohio Valley Conference play on the road in 2015, with a March 6th-8th series at Eastern Illinois. Austin Peay’s road conference series this year will include Murray State (March 20th-22nd), Southeast Missouri (April 2nd-4th), Eastern Kentucky (April 17th-19th) and UT Martin (May 1st-3rd).
After opening at Eastern Illinois, the Govs return to Raymond C. Hand Park to begin their home OVC slate when they face Jacksonville State, March 13th-15th. Home weekends in OVC play include Tennessee Tech (March 27th-29th), Belmont (April 10th-12th), Morehead State (April 24th-26th) and SIU Edwardsville (May 8th-10th).
“Our conference schedule sets up well with some key series at home,” said McClure. “Our fans will get to see quality conference competition at home this year. However, we also have to go to some very difficult places to play in the OVC. As a whole, our conference slate will be tough from start to finish.”
The Govs off week from conference play will rotate to the regular season’s final week in both 2015 and 2016. Austin Peay will close 2015 with a three-game series against Evansville with the first two games held Thursday and Friday in Evansville and the regular-season finale, Saturday, in Clarksville.
