Austin Peay Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – The chances were there for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team in Sunday’s Senior Day match against Tennessee Tech, but the final touch was elusive as the Lady Govs battled the Golden Eagles to a scoreless draw at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
The two squads spent much of the first half feeling one another out, until the final 15 minutes of the period.
During the half’s final third, the Lady Govs unleashed six shots, including a penalty kick from sophomore Gina Fabbro that was saved by Tennessee Tech keeper Rebecca Toler, who stopped the ensuing rebound by junior Courtney Sheppard as well.
Despite doubling up the Golden Eagles shot total, 16-8, the Lady Govs were never able to solve Toler and the Tennessee Tech defense. In the second half, Austin Peay was only able to put two shots on frame: a 77th-minute attempt by junior Shelby Olszewski and a last-minute try by sophomore Mary Ruth Locastro.
The two overtime periods netted little more in the way of offensive attempts. Senior Frankie Carbajal put one on frame in the 94th minute, and Tennessee Tech’s Zoie Hensley forced a save from junior Nikki Filippone in the 102nd, but both sides came away from the contest without a tally on the scoreboard.
Toler made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Filippone made two for Austin Peay. It’s the first scoreless draw Austin Peay has been a part of since October 14th, 2012 against SIU Edwardsville. The contest doubled as Senior Day for Lady Govs Carbajal and Claire Pultz, who were honored in an on-field pregame ceremony.
With a spot in the OVC Tournament still very much in play, Austin Peay hosts Murray State (7:00pm, Friday, October 24th) before traveling to UT Martin for a 2:00pm tilt against the two-time defending regular-season champion Skyhawks, Sunday, October 26th.
