Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUTerre Haute, IN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team stood tough in the face of an offensive barrage against Indiana State but dropped the exhibition opener, 1-0, Monday at Memorial Stadium.

The Sycamores attempted 25 shots, putting eight on net. Conversely, Austin Peay could muster only three shots total, and did not force a save from Indiana State during the entire match.

“We’ve been really focused on defending the first week of camp and not as much on possession and keeping the ball,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “The purpose of these games is to get some experience and see some players in different spots, and I think this was a great matchup for us.”

Indiana State would get on the board in the first of three 30-minute periods in this exhibition contest.

Kayla Welch’s free-kick try from just outside the box and put it past junior Nikki Filippone, who saved the other three shots the Sycamores put on net in her first 30 minutes in goal; she would return later in the third period.

“We haven’t been able to focus on defending set pieces yet,” Guth said. “That’s something that will tighten up as the year goes along.”

Sophomore Katie Emig saved all four shots on goal she faced in the second period to keep the deficit at one goal, but Austin Peay could manage only two shots, by freshman Sophia Fabbro in the 33rd minute and sophomore Alyssa Plowman in the 41st minute, neither of which drew a save from Brittany San Roman. Austin Peay could not get away a shot in the final half-hour of play, coming away scoreless in the exhibition opener.

“We had some good saves and really solid goalkeeping tonight,” Guth said. “We’ll take some positives away from this one and into Kentucky.”

Austin Peay returns to action with a 10:00am (CT) match at Kentucky, Wednesday, in the exhibition finale.
