Nashville’s Hector Gomez and Pete Orr Go Deep

Nashville SoundsMemphis, TN – The Nashville Sounds (49-44) got off to a slow start Tuesday night at AutoZone Park, but mounted a late-inning comeback to win 4-2 over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds.

After being held without a hit through the game’s first six innings and trailing by two, Nashville’s bats awoke from their slumber and the Sounds plated three runs in the 7th to take a lead they would never surrender.

Outfielder Elian Herrera became the team’s first baserunner of the night by reaching on a two-base fielding error by Memphis third baseman Jermaine Curtis.

Hector Gomez followed Herrera by lifting a home run over the left-field wall to tie it up, 2-2, and extend his season-best hit streak to eight games. The dinger is Gomez’s 10th of the season, one shy of matching the team lead.

The Sounds took the 3-2 lead on newcomer Matt Clark’s RBI double to left field, which scored Jason Rogers, who singled, but left Sean Halton to be tagged out at home plate.

Infielder Pete Orr added an insurance run for Nashville with his solo homer to lead off the 8th inning, marking the final run of the game.

The rally marks the first win in 32 opportunities for Nashville when trailing after the 6th inning.

Reliever Alfredo Figaro (4-1) picked up the win for his two perfect innings behind Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann, who allowed Memphis two runs in five innings of work.

Closer Jeremy Jeffress notched his third save for the club, inducing double-play balls in both the 8th and 9th innings to strand Redbirds runners.

Memphis grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Sounds in the 1st inning, when Shane Robinson scored on a groundout after his lead-off single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch from Jungmann and took third on a groundout.

Memphis doubled its lead in the home half of the 5th inning on a pair of two-out knocks. Tommy Pham hit a triple to the right-field corner and was driven home by Stephen Piscotty’s single to left.

Redbirds starter John Gast used 61 pitches to retire 17 consecutive Sounds batters in his rain-shortened start.

The game went into a 20-minute rain delay prior to the start of the 4th inning, and paused for a 36-minute hiatus in the top of the 6th.

The Sounds will take on the Redbirds again on Wednesday at 7:05pm CT. RHP Michael Blazek Nelson (1-3, 4.44) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Memphis’ LHP Tim Cooney (8-5, 3.94). Sounds broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.
