City of Clarksville held 36th Annual Queen City Road Race on Saturday

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday the City of Clarksville’s Department of Parks and Recreation held their 36th Annual Queen City Road Race on the campus of Austin Peay State University.

“The Queen City Road Race was first ran 36 years and is intended to get people out and about, it encourages fitness, and helps to get and keep the participants healthy,” said Queen City Road Race Director Tina Boysha.

“We’re just pleased to have everybody come out today. This is such beautiful day with perfect weather,” said Clarksville Department of Parks and Recreation director Mark Tummons. “We’re just pleased to have everybody come out today. It is such beautiful day with absolutely perfect weather. I think that this marks the first time in a few years where we’ve had a race where the weather was not raining, really cold, or both. We’re excited to have the number of people we have racing today.”

He continued, “I think Clarksvillians in general are striving to be healthy, they are working hard to become more fit; and this is just one of the many things that they do to accomplish that goal. They put it on the calendar every year they want to come out and participate in the Queen City Road Race each year.”

Over 2,000 people of all ages participated in this years race, up from 1,650 races last year. The day began with a group warmup on Marion Street in front of the Foy Fitnesss Center on the campus of Austin Peay State University.

The first race was a 1K movement, and saw hundreds of Clarksvillians of all stripes take part. This was a race everyone can participate in at their own pace.

It was followed up by the 5K race. This race saw the most people participate. 34-year-old Ben Clark finished with the time of 18:45.1 and lead the pack by over a full minute. Second place was hotly contested with the second and third place races finishing with a difference of just 1/10 of a second. 44-year-old James Strait finished in 19:47.0, with 18-year-old Walter Leslie hot on his heels with a time of 19:47.1.

Tamara Ochoa was the top female finisher with the time of 19:49.6. She outdistanced the second and third place winners by just over two minutes. Rosemary Calcese finished with a time of 22:12.8, and Sarah Blank took third place with 22:15.8

The most challenging race of the day of course is the 7K Road Race. This race was added last year to give more experienced runners and more challenging course. 39-year-old Daniel Christian led the pack with around under 40 seconds between him and the second and third place finishers. He finished the race in 27:41.6. 27-year-old Jason Heiney came in second with a time of 28:20.8. 14-year-old Zachary Bolen came in third with a time of 28:22.5.

32-year-old Naketa Edney was the top female finisher in the 7K Road Race with the time of 30:52.8. She was followed close behind by 20-year-old Makaila Offutt with a time of 31:13.3, and 40-year-old Georgie Stimson came in third with 31:33.7.

One of the 5k Road Race participants was Clarksville Resident Terry Tobin, and taking part in this year’s Queen City Road Race was a big milestone for her. Two years ago she was involved in an accident on the family farm that resulted in her being paralyzed; and she was told that she would probably never walk again! She bucked the odds, and so was able to participate in this year’s race! When she crossed the finish line she thrust the two canes she uses to help herself walk into the air in triumph; while talking to the author, she was crying tears of joy. She had completed the race in just 31 minutes.

This year the race timing system was provided by R.A.C.E. (Raise the Awareness of Charities through Events) Nashville. They use the Jaguar Timing System, a state of the art RFID chip timing system capable of a 0.001 second accuracy and speeds of up to 200 mph and can be read from up to 120 feet away.

Partners for the event included the Clarksville Montgomery County school system, The Tennessee Coordinated Health Program, JROTC programs from several of the area schools, the Northwest High School Pom Squad, Charlie company from the 101st Airborne Division, Northcrest Medical Center, and the lead sponsor this year is Cumberland Bank & Trust. “We simply cannot do this race without our sponsors and volunteers, they are very very important to making this race come together each year!” said Boysha.

Molly Clark, a student at Clarksville Academy designed the artwork that was featured on the official race T-shirt and event poster. Along with that honor, Molly was awarded $100.00 for her art class, an art kit and a framed poster of her winning artwork!
