APSU Governors Baseball lose 10-9 to late rally by Morehead State Eagles

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUMorehead, KY – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team nursed a lead for five innings but could not hold off a Morehead State late rally and fell 10-9 in Ohio Valley Conference action, Friday night, at Allen Field.

Leading 9-6 after its half of the eighth inning, Austin Peay saw Morehead State score the game’s final four runs.

The Eagles struck for two runs in the eighth as second baseman Tyler Bigler drove in a run with a triple and then scored on right fielder Brandon Rawe’s single, cutting the deficit to one run.

Morehead State (24-21, 12-10 OVC) returned in the ninth and saw the first three men of the inning reach base, third baseman Jeff Birkofer delivering a walk-off two-run single.

Cayce BredlauAustin Peay (18-29, 10-12 OVC) grabbed a 6-4 lead thanks to a five-run fourth inning. The Govs sent 10 men to the plate in that inning with left fielder Cayce Bredlau delivering a two-run single to grab the two-run advantage.

The Govs nursed that lead over the next five innings. Morehead State scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, but that burst was matched by the Govs two-run sixth inning.

Austin Peay would tack on another run in the eighth to build a 9-6 advantage that it could not hold on to – its first loss when leading after eight innings this season.

Alex RoblesAustin Peay reliever Ryan Quick (2-5) suffered the loss after allowing four of the five batters he faced to reach base.

He struck out one to end the eighth inning, but did not record an out in the ninth.

Robles went just 5.1 innings from the start, allowing six runs on seven hits. It was his shortest start since the season’s second weekend.

Bredlau led the Govs offense with a 3-for-5, two RBI outing. Robles did not record a hit, going 0-for-4, but had three RBI.

Morehead State reliever Tyler Keele (5-1) picked up the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to finish the game. Starter Luke Humphreys allowed six runs on three hits and four walks in 3.2 innings.

Birkofer was the Eagles big bat, going 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace the 13-hit attack.

Austin Peay and Morehead State continue their three game series with a 2:00pm (ET), Saturday contest.
