Austin Peay Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team could not overcome a barrage of Eastern Kentucky home runs in a 7-6 Ohio Valley Conference loss, Sunday, at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Eastern Kentucky (21-23, 10-11 OVC) used four home runs to score all seven of its runs. Designated hitter Bryan Soloman hit a two-run blast in the third to tie the game 2-2. Second baseman Doug Teegarden (two-run) and third baseman Luke Wurzelbacher (solo) hit back-to-back shots in the fourth to tie the game 5-5.However, it was catcher Sean Hagen’s two-run home run in the fifth that gave Eastern Kentucky a 7-5 lead it would not relinquish.
Austin Peay (18-26, 10-11 OVC) scored the game’s first two runs, using a Logan Gray fielder’s choice in the second and a stolen base to plate the pair of runs. The Govs then scored three in the third as third baseman Alex Robles, left fielder Ridge Smith and catcher P.J. Torres each hit RBI singles.
After Eastern Kentucky took its 7-5 lead in the fifth, Austin Peay would scratch back one run against EKU reliever Ben Gullo after Smith tripled with one out and scored on Torres’ RBI single.
That would be the final run either team would score as both bullpens went scoreless over the final four innings. EKU’s Gullo and closer Anthony Bazzani combined to allow just three base runners over the final four frames. They were matched by Austin Peay’s Caleb Powell and Ryan Quick, who combined to allow just three base runners over the final four innings.
Gullo (2-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out six in 4.2 innings. He would surrender a leadoff walk in the ninth. Bazzini took the mound and the Govs moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt and fly out, but Bazzani struck out Smith to end the game and record his season’s sixth save
Torres’ 3-for-4, two RBI effort led the Govs 12-hit offensive attack. Smith went 3-for-5 while center fielder Cayce Bredlau added a 2-for-5 outing.
Soloman and Hagan each went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead Eastern Kentucky which needed just nine hits in the win.
Austin Peay closes out its five-game homestand when it hosts Western Kentucky in a 6:00pm, Tuesday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
