Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team got a huge boost with its 5-2 Ohio Valley Conference win, Saturday, at the APSU Tennis Center, moving back above .500 in league play and improving their chances for not just a berth in April’s OVC Tournament, but also a crucial first-round bye in the six-team tournament.

Austin Peay (8-5, 3-2 OVC) made it five straight wins against the visitors from Charleston, IL Eastern Illinois falls to 5-7 on the season, 2-3 in OVC play.

“This was a good win for us,” said head coach Ross Brown. “They beat Tennessee Tech and a couple of other good schools. It came together for us today.”

Senior Jasmin Ademovic snapped an uncharacteristic three-match losing streak with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 win against Moritz Kandt at No. 1. The Bosnian has been recovering from an ankle injury that slowed him for much of late February and early March.

One Gov who hasn’t struggled in singles has been junior Iago Seffrin. The crafty Brazilian won his fourth straight at No. 4 singles, dispatching Robert Skolik in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 7-6). The four-match win streak is the longest singles run in his Austin Peay career.

Juniors Dimitar Ristovski and Aleksas Tverijonas have continued a run of success that has become standard for the pair in their two-plus seasons at Austin Peay. Ristovski triumphed at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Grant Thompson, while Tverijonas moved to 12-1 on the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Ryan Henderson at No. 3 singles.

Freshman James Mitchell rounded out the Govs singles victories. The Australian defeated Rui Silva at No. 5 with a 7-5, 6-2 win, just his second since February 22nd.

While the Govs triumphs in singles earned them the victory, their struggles in the doubles continued against Eastern Illinois. Austin Peay has now won the doubles point just twice in seven March matches.

“Putting it together has been tough,” Brown said. “We lost two good doubles players from last year. Our No. 2 has been solid but we’ve been trying out different things elsewhere. We moved Evan (Borowski) in today.”

Action continues for the Govs with tomorrow’s Senior Day contest against SIU Edwardsville scheduled for a 10:00am start.
