Austin Peay State University Softball set to host Belmont, Tennessee State OVC matches this weekend

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will be looking of its first Ohio Valley Conference victories of the season this weekend, at Cheryl Holt Field, as it hosts Belmont and Tennessee State in a pair of doubleheaders.

The Lady Govs (11-14, 0-2 OVC) will face Belmont (7-14, 1-1 OVC) in a Saturday twinbill, starting at noon, while Tennessee State (13-17, 1-1 OVC) – who hosts Murray State Saturday – will come to town Sunday for a noon doubleheader.

Austin Peay is led offensively by senior Lauren de Castro, who enters the four-game weekend hitting at a white-hot .422 clip – including seven doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI.

Mel PavelSophomore Mel Pavel has also gotten off to a good state at the plate through the first 25 games of the season, hitting .310, with three doubles, a home run and a team-best 17 RBI.

Belmont is led by Kat Hollingsworth, who comes in hitting .379, with three doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs.

Kirbie Ferrell (.324) and Ashley Hammer (.313) are also hitting above .300 on the season for the Bruins.

In the circle, de Castro tops the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 7-5 win-loss mark and a 3.81 ERA. She also has 39 strikeouts in 64.1 innings of work this spring.

Sidney HooperSidney Hooper (2-2, 4.38 ERA) and Brianna Bartuccio (2-7, 5.69 ERA), both freshmen, have the other four Lady Govs wins this spring.

Belmont’s top pitcher is Taylor Moon, who comes into the doubleheader with a 3-4 record and a 3.25 ERA.

Sunday’s opponent Tennessee State is led offensively by Lindsey Burgess, with a .353 batting average, while Courtney Gearlds comes in hitting .313.

Shea Morris has been the workhorse in the circle for TSU, with a 7-6 record, a 3.11 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 92.1 innings pitched.
