Clarksville, TN – A strong top-three and another doubles win gave Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team its first victory for the 2014 spring season in Friday’s 4-3 win against Western Kentucky.
The Lady Govs continued their improvement in doubles, taking the point for the second match in a row. Junior Vanessa Tavares and freshman Isabela Jovanovic were dominant in the No. 2 match, defeating Carolina Barboza and Gabby Crofford, 8-1. Senior Andra Cornea and junior Ornella Di Salvo clinched the point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Madeline Phillips and Monta Reinfelde.
Cornea, Di Salvo and Tavares took the top three singles matches to clinch the win for Austin Peay. At No. 1, Cornea picked up her season’s first singles win with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 defeat of Reinfelde.
Di Salvo shut Phillips out with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Tavares wrapped up the positive results for the Lady Govs by rallying from a rough first set for a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 win over Barboza.
The Lady Govs return to action Saturday at Southern Indiana, with action scheduled to begin at 6:00pm.
