Glencoe, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team sits in fourth place after the first day of the 18th Annual Chris Banister Golf Classic, being played at Silver Lakes Golf Course.
The Lady Govs shot an opening-round 320 to sit behind host Jacksonville State (294), UALR (312) and Belmont (318) in the season-opening tournament.
A pair of freshman led the Lady Govs in the opening round on the Robert Trent Jones Course. Morgan Gardner fired a 78 while fellow freshman Morgan Kauffman added a 79. Sophomore Jessica Cathey came in with an 80 while seniors Rachel Deaton and Tala Mumford shot 83s.
“To say I was surprised by our two freshmen breaking 80 I am not,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Coming down here we really have been playing well. I am surprised we didn’t have more scores under 80. We have to do a better job of hitting more greens and making more putts.
“I am very proud of the freshmen, especially with this being the first round of their first tournament. They played well, yet the left some shots out there. We all did.”
Playing as individuals, freshman Amber Bosworth fired an 84 while junior Meghan Mueller and freshman Kelsey Schutt each had 86s, the latter holing out for an eagle on the 10th hole.
“We had half of our players use the two-hour delay to regroup and finish strong,” Robson said. “We also had some of our players, especially our freshmen, show some nerves on the greens, especially early.”
