Des Moines, Iowa – A windy day at Friday’s Drake Relays hindered Austin Peay State University senior Chantelle Grey, but did not break the Missoula, MT, native. Grey finished ninth in a tough 800m run field at the Drake Track Complex.
Grey jumped out early and led through the first 550 meters of the 800, but was passed by a late-charging Vanessa McLeod from Purdue. Grey was subsequently boxed in and faded toward the back of a close pack – her 2:08.44 mark was less than two seconds behind Georgia’s Megan Malasarte, who won the event.“With the wind as strong as it was, jumping out to the lead may not have been the best strategy,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “But we’ll know for next time and adjust our strategy. Finishing high in the field at this prestigious meet is pretty good. Now we’ve got to get ready for conference and get her out with a fast time there.”
Grey and the rest of the Lady Govs will travel to Charleston, IL, for next weekend’s Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Eastern Illinois at O’Brien Field.
