APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Golf
Columbia, MO – It will take a near miracle for Austin Peay State University men’s golf team to make it three straight tournament championships, but nonetheless the Governors sit in second place after two Monday rounds of the Columbia Orthopaedic Group Intercollegiate, being played at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
Despite a slow start, the Governors shot an even-par 288 in the first round and 3-under 285 in the second round for a 573 total. APSU, however, is 16 shots behind host Missouri, which shot 557 on its home course. Missouri is ranked 32nd nationally in the most recent Golfstat rankings.Washington State is in third place at 1-over 577 while Cal Poly is fourth at 6-over 582 in the 12-team tournament.
Starting on the course’s most demanding portion, the Govs found themselves at 10-over par at one point during the early stages, Monday, but scrambled back to get to even par as Chris Baker tallied four birdies, Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten three while Dustin Korte had one on the front side. Iten finished the first 18 holes at 2-under 70 and Korte at 1-under 71.
The afternoon round saw the Governors play more consistent afternoon golf. Korte, in particular, was strong, shooting a 4-under 68 to sit at 5-under 139 to sit in second place over behind Missouri’s Emilio Cuatero (137). Korte’s 68 tied for APSU’s low round this season.
