Brentwood, TN – Senior middle distance runner Chantelle Grey, of Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday.
Grey is the seventh Austin Peay athlete to capture an OVC Athlete of the Year Award for track and field in the program’s history. Given annually since 1990 and split into track and field awards in 2001, this honor was bestowed on Grey in a vote by the conference coaches.
“This is obviously a huge honor for her,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “It’s always great when the other conference coaches hold you in high regard, as they clearly do with Chantelle.”Grey leads the OVC in the 800m run, and ranks 38th nationally, thanks to her 2:07.69 run at the Spire Invitational in Geneva, Ohio two weeks ago. She leads the conference by more than a second over Eastern Illinois’ Erika Ramos.
The Missoula, MT native also runs a leg of the 4x400m relay for Austin Peay, which ranks third in the conference in that event. The Lady Govs 3:48.76 mark at last weekend’s Buckeye Tune-Up has Grey gunning for two medals at this weekend’s OVC Indoor Championships in Charleston, IL.
“She’s pretty confident right now,” Molnar said. “This symbolizes all the hard work she’s put in this season.”
Earlier this season, Grey garnered her first adidas® OVC Runner of the Week award for winning the Ed Temple Invitational (January 5th) and setting the conference’s top mark in the 800m at the Blazer Invite (Jan. 11).
This is Austin Peay’s first indoor Athlete of the Year honor since Carrie Burggraf won field honors in 2010. It’s the first track honor for a Lady Gov since Austin Peay Hall of Famer Sheena Gooding won back-to-back Indoor Track Athlete of the Year awards for 2001-02.
