Funds targeted for one-time technology investment and restoring capital outlay funds lost in recent past
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s state of the state address included good news on many different fronts for education in Tennessee, especially for Montgomery County.
“In the recent past we have experienced an erosion in the state’s allocation for capital outlay funds as a part of the Better Education Program (BEP) funding formula,” said State Representative Joe Pitts (D – Clarksville). “The proposed funding increases will help our public education system immeasurably with technology upgrades and capital outlay.”
Funding for public education in a growing community like Clarksville-Montgomery County is comprised of federal, state and local appropriations. The proposed technology funds help faculty, staff, students and families alike. Keeping pace with changing technology is vital to a student’s success and translates into skill development to help them find a job when ready.Local school districts can invest in advancements to help families stay in touch with their children’s teachers. The funds also help with the district’s ability to communicate within the school system and to the community.
This proposed funding increase by Governor Haslam was just one of the many highlights of a state of the state address that finds our state in excellent fiscal condition after what has been arguably the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression of 1929 and beyond.
Over the next few weeks, we will highlight in greater detail some of the other details contained in the Governor’s proposed budget as well as our continuing series on bills we are proud to sponsor and some other issues important to District 67.
