APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Cross Country
Clarksville, TN – After an individual victory and top-five team finish at last weekend’s JSU Foothills, Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team makes a return trip to Chattanooga for Saturday’s Front Runner Invitational, hosted by Chattanooga.
The women’s event is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm (CT) on Chattanooga’s Moccasin Bend course.
The Lady Govs will face strong competition at this weekend’s meet. In addition to host Chattanooga, Austin Peay will be up against Bryan College, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee State and UT Martin. This will be a return trip to the Scenic City for the Lady Govs, who finished third as a team in September’s Powerade Invitational thanks to top-10 performances from junior Xiamar Richards (sixth), senior Chantelle Grey (seventh) and junior Kendra Kirksey (ninth). The trio’s runs in September earned them the second, third and fourth-best two-mile marks in Lady Govs history.
Richards, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Female Runner of the Week, carries momentum into this weekend’s meet after winning the JSU Foothills 5K event last weekend. Kirksey (fourth) and Grey (eighth) joined her in the top-10 for the second time this season.
“That’s what I was expecting a week ago at Louisville,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “Hopefully, we can keep that going at Chattanooga.”
This will be the Lady Govs final tune-up before returning to Oxford, AL, for the 2012 OVC Championships, October 27th.
