Nashville Sounds get thumped by the Albuquerque Isotopes 13-3

Nashville Sounds Baseball

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Albuquerque Isotopes rapped out 17 hits en route to a 13-3 defeat of the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium in front of 9,249 fans in the opener of a five-game series.

Third baseman Alex Castellanos belted a pair of homers and drove in five runs and Jerry Sands went 4-for-6, including a longball, to pace the Isotopes offense.

Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Albuquerque erupted for 12 runs over the final four frames.

Isotopes starter John Ely (10-7) worked a quality start, holding the Sounds to three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings, to pick up the victory.

The Sounds took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning against Ely. With two outs, Caleb Gindl reached on a bunt single, moved to third on a Taylor Green single, and scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Tim Federowicz. Green’s first-inning single extended the infielder’s on -base streak to 24 consecutive contests.

Nashville upped the advantage to 2-0 in the second when Jordan Brown (2-for-3) tripled into the right field corner and scored on Jason Jaramillo’s sacrifice fly.

Sands put the visitors on the board in the fourth when led off the frame with a solo homer to right off Sounds starter Brian Baker, his 16th home run of the year.

Baker stranded runners in scoring position during scoreless third, fourth, and fifth innings, but he was unable to do the same in the sixth, as Albuquerque knocked him from the game during a five-run frame.

The Isotopes loaded the bags with no outs on a walk followed by a pair of singles against the right-hander. After Baker retired the next two batters, Herrera grounded a two-run single up the middle to give the visitors a 3-2 lead, ending Baker’s night.

Tim Dillard took over on the hill for Nashville and was greeted by a three-run homer to left off the bat of Castellanos, the third baseman’s 12th big fly of the season.

Baker (2-4) allowed five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out six during his 112-pitch effort, the largest workload by a Nashville hurler all season.

The Sounds got a run back in the home half of the sixth when Corey Patterson singled and scored on a Gindl double, making it a 6-3 game.

Albuquerque pulled further ahead in the seventh, tacking on three more runs against Dillard to extend its lead to 9-3. Matt Angle, pinch-hitter Tyler Henson, and Herrera each contributed RBI singles during the frame.

The Isotopes added a pair of runs in the eighth against Amaury Rivas before Castellanos capped off the evening’s scoring in the ninth with a two-run homer to center, his second longball of the night and 13th of the year.

Sounds second baseman Eric Farris went 0-for-4 to snap his season-best 10-game hitting streak.

The teams continue their series with a 5:05pm doubleheader on Sunday evening that will consist of a pair of seven-inning games. Right-hander Hiram Burgos will make his Triple-A debut when he starts for the Sounds in the opener against Albuquerque left-hander Derrick Loop (9-2, 4.18).

Right-hander Seth McClung (2-12, 5.76) will man the bump for Nashville in the nightcap and square off against right-hander Blake Johnson (2-0, 5.79).
