APSU Sports: Austin Peay Softball
Murray, KY – Austin Peay’s softball team couldn’t corral Murray State Sunday afternoon, in the conclusion of their three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, as the Racers recorded 28 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from the Lady Govs 15-4 and 6-1.
Megan Glosser’s leadoff triple for Murray State to open the bottom of the first inning in Game 1 kind of set the tone for the day, as the Racers sent nine to the plate in the opening inning, with five scoring – highlighted by Sarah Anderson’s three-run homer.Austin Peay (15-27, 7-17 OVC) rallied back in the top of the next inning, scoring four times on five hits, as they also sent nine batters to the plate.
Junior Morgan Brewer opened the inning with a single for Austin Peay and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kayla Davidson.
A single by red-shirt junior Jessica Ryan moved Brewer to third, where should score one batter later off an infield single by senior Catie Cozart.
That would bring up the Lady Govs top hitter in sophomore Lauren de Castro, who didn’t disappoint, hammering a two-and-one fastball over the trees out behind the left-center field fence for a three-run homer to cut the Murray State (22-16; 14-10 OVC) lead back to one, 5-4.
But that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get the rest of the way, with Murray State scoring three times in the bottom of the third inning to push its lead out to four runs, 8-4, while blowing the game open with a seven-run fourth inning – including two home runs in the frame.
Freshmen Lauren Bradley and Paige Neely also had hits for the Lady Govs, who were led by de Castro’s two hits and three RBI.
The nightcap wasn’t much better for the Lady Govs, with the Racers scoring the game’s first four runs – including a three-run homer by Alexa Becker in the first inning and a solo shot by Mandi Kellerman in the third inning.
Austin Peay would score its lone run in the top of the fourth inning on a single by Ryan, driving in Cozart – who had reached on a two-out opposite field double.
The Racers would close out the day’s scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for the 6-1 final.
Brewer and Davidson also had hits for Austin Peay in the nightcap, but de Castro led the Lady Govs with three hits in four at bats in Game 2, to finish the doubleheader 5-for-6 at the plate – plus drawing a walk.
The Lady Govs are back in action Wednesday, April 25th at Evansville.
