APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Old Hickory, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team sits in fifth place after the first day of the Belmont Invitational, being played at Old Hickory Golf Club.
The Lady Govs shot a first-day 323, Monday, on the par-72, 5,983-yard layout. Tuesday’s final round will begin with an 8:30am shotgun start.
Sophomore Rachel Deaton, who continues to battle feet problems, battled to a 76, Monday, and is tied for sixth place, individually. However, Deaton was the only Lady Govs to shoot below 80 on the round. Redshirt sophomore Tabitha Beard fired an 81, followed by senior Ashley Averitt (82), freshman Meghan Mueller (84) and junior Holly Batey (86), who battled an illness, Monday.“I am really proud of Rachel,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Her feet remain an issue but she was able to overcome it and really play well today.
“I also thought (Ashley) Averitt really scrambled well to get her score. But overall as a team we have some work to do tomorrow if we can to move up.”
Playing as individuals, sophomore Tala Mumford is tied for 9th after firing a 78 while Lauren Bond is 14th after a 79. Freshman Marta Gutierrez didn’t compete because of a right ankle injury.
“It was good to see both Tala and Lauren play more like they are capable of—they have been struggling,” Robson said.
“Hopefully, they can take what they did today and build on it tomorrow, hopefully, finishing off with another good round.”
Host Belmont leads the tourney with a 304, followed by UAB (317), Lipscomb (317) and Evansville (318).
