APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Carbondale, IL – Austin Peay State University displayed marked improvement in the final round of the Saluki Invitational, played at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
After shooting an opening-round 330, the Lady Govs cut 11 strokes from that total to finish with a 319 and an overall 649, good enough to allow the Lady Govs to rise from 13th to a 10th-place tie with Chicago State. Host Southern Illinois won the tournament with a 608 while Iowa was second 10 strokes back.After no Lady Gov team member was able to break 80 in Sunday’s opening round, two veterans led the way, Monday. Both junior Holly Batey and senior Ashley Averitt each had 78s. Sophomore Rachel Deaton followed with an 81 while freshman Meghan Mueller chipped in with an 82. Redshirt sophomore Tabitha Beard was the only Lady Govs to see her score rise, Monday, firing an 87.
Freshman Marta Gutierrez, playing as an individual, matched her 79 from Sunday with another 79 on Monday. She and Batey finished in a 19th-place tie with 158s. Averitt was APSU’s next best finisher in 42nd with a 163.
