APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Tennis
Martin, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis dropped a 4-3 match at UT Martin, Sunday, to cap a weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play.
It was the Lady Govs first OVC loss after picking up a 6-1 win, Saturday, against Southeast Missouri. Austin Peay fell to 5-11 overall with a 2-1 OVC mark while UT Martin improved to 4-8 overall with a 3-0 league record.
While the Lady Govs fell one match shy of their third OVC win, senior Vanja Tomic worked her season-long win streak to 14 consecutive matches with a straight-set win against UTM’s Jodie Tiley. For Tomic, it was her 40th career win at No. 1 singles and even more remarkable as she avenged a straight-set loss to Tiley, last season.Austin Peay’s Ornella Di Salvo won a super tiebreaker to the match at No. 2 singles, handing UTM’s Johanie Van Zyl her eight consecutive loss at the position. It was third OVC win at No. 2 singles and she has now won four of her last five matches. Alison Carre also picked up a straight-set win against Anna Winklemann at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Di Salvo and Andra Cornea earned the Lady Govs only win at No.2, defeated Anna Marie Herbold and Alice Lang. The Lady Govs lost 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
