APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Gulf Shores, AL – In extremely difficult conditions, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team edged Belmont, 335-339, Tuesday afternoon, in a spring season-opening dual match played at the Lakes/Cypress at Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club.
Tabitha Beard and Rachel Deaton, a pair of sophomores, led the Lady Govs with 80s on the par-72 layout. Freshman Meghan Mueller followed with an 85 while senior Ashley Averitt was the Lady Govs’ other counter with a 90. Sophomore Tala Mumford added a 92.“The conditions were really tough today,” APSU coach Sara Robson. “It was really windy and the pin placements were really difficult.
“I thought Tabitha and Rachel played well considering the conditions. And Meghan hit the ball as well, if not better, than anyone out there. I am going to have to see why she didn’t score better.”
Playing as individuals, Holly Batey shot a 90, followed by fellow junior Lauren Bond at 96 while freshman Marta Gutierrez finished with a 98.
Kelly Maguigan led Belmont with an 82, followed by Sydney Hudson (83), Janet Steen (86), Morgan McQuary (88) and Patricia Masick (91).
“Certainly our girls struggled with the conditions, but it was good to get started,” Robson said. “We certainly have a lot to work on and we will do that the rest of the week.”
The Lady Govs and Belmont were slated to play a second dual match, Thursday, but because of unforeseen course circumstances, the match has been canceled.
