APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Tennis
Louisville, KY – Senior Vanja Tomic earned Austin Peay State University’s only win in a 6-1, Saturday, loss at Louisville.
It was the second-straight singles win for Tomic, who needed a tiebreak to down Louisville’s Rebecca Shine at No. 1 singles. Austin Peay also had strong play out of freshmen Alison Carre at No. 2, despite falling in straight sets. Freshman Ornella Di Salvo also played well at No. 3 singles.
“Vanja is always ready to step up to the challenge,” head coach Malik Tabet said. “She pushed herself today and played a tough match. Alison and Ornella also both played well today. The talent is there. It’s becoming a matter of establishing some confidence in the young players.”
Austin Peay dropped the doubles point to start the match and never seemed to get things going in singles play. After a disappointing loss to Evansville, Friday, Tabet seemed pleased with his team despite the loss.
“We’re a young team and we have a lot of maturing to do,” Tabet said. “We didn’t play like we are capable against Evansville and I was interested to see how we would bounce back. This result isn’t a true picture of how we played.”
The Lady Govs continue on the road with a Friday match at Samford.
