Doyle leads volleyball to OVC title, named Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Nikki Doyle, a sophomore on the Austin Peay State University volleyball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Nikki DoyleThe Santa Maria, CA, native was named “Most Valuable Player” of the Ohio Valley Conference volleyball championship. She led the Lady Govs to a pair of four-set victories to claim their first tournament title since 1991.

Doyle recorded 20 kills and a .234 attack percentage in the semifinal match against Tennessee Tech. She followed that with 17 kills and a .452 attack percentage in the championship at Morehead State.

The Lady Govs are preparing to face Big East Tournament Champion Louisville in a non-conference warmup prior to the NCAA Tournament.

Austin Peay will learn its destination for the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship at 2:00pm (CT), Sunday. The first round of that tournament begins December 2nd at various campus sites.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior Sarah Alisaleh, of the volleyball team, was named to the OVC All-Tournament team after recording 102 assists (12.75 per set) in the Lady Govs two matches in the championship, including 55 in the semifinal against Tennessee Tech.
  • Junior Ilyanna Hernandez, of the volleyball team, was named to the OVC All-Tournament team after recording 26 kills in the tournament’s two matches. She recorded 16 kills and a .343 attack percentage against Morehead State in the championship match.
  • Junior Tyshwan Edmondson, of the men’s basketball team, scored in double figures in each of the Govs three games last week. He was Austin Peay’s leading scorer against Lipscomb (21 points) and Southern Illinois (19).
  • Junior Jasmine Rayner, of the women’s basketball team, scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and nabbed four steals in the Lady Govs victory against Utah Valley. She averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game during Austin Peay’s three games last week.
