Nashville Pulls Into Tie For First Place With Victory
Nashville, TN – Sam Narron worked his fourth straight quality start and Brendan Katin homered with four RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to an 8-2 victory over the division-rival Omaha Royals on Sunday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.
With the win, the Sounds (51-43) took three of four in the series and pulled into a tie with Iowa for first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.
Narron (5-3) continued his solid pitching since joining the Sounds, turning in his sixth quality start in seven starting assignments to pick up the victory. He held Omaha to two runs on nine hits over seven innings, lowering his ERA to 2.79 with the effort.
The Nashville offense ripped seven of its 11 hits on the night for extra bases. Katin (2-for-3), Mat Gamel (2-for-2), and Erick Almonte (2-for-4) registered multiple-hit efforts for the Sounds; Almonte’s effort was the veteran’s fourth consecutive two-hit contest.
The Sounds got off to a quick start, plating three first-inning runs against Omaha starter Manuaris Baez. Norris Hopper and Gamel drew consecutive one-out walks from the right-hander before both scored on Katin’s two-run double down the left field line. Almonte increased the Nashville advantage to 3-0 with a two-out RBI single later in the frame.
Omaha got a run back in the third with a two-out rally against Narron. After the first two batters were retired, Marc Maddox singled to center, moved to second when David Lough walked, and scored the visitors’ first run on shortstop Ed Lucas’ RBI single to left.
Nashville increased its lead to 7-1 in the third with a four-run outburst against Baez. After Gamel led off the frame with a double, Katin slugged his 13th home run of the year, a two-run shot to center. The rally continued as Joe Koshansky singled and Luis Cruz doubled before Ray Olmedo plated them both on a two-run two-bagger to the wall in right-center.
The Royals scored their second run in the sixth against Narron when Lucas led off with a double to right-center then came plateward when Rick Ankiel followed with an RBI single to left, making it a 7-2 contest.
Sounds catcher Martin Maldonado extended his longest hitting streak of the year to eight games in the seventh inning, roping a two-out RBI single to center off Omaha reliever Matt Herges. Almonte scored on the play to up the lead to 8-2 after doubling earlier in the frame.
Baez (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Royals after being tagged for seven runs on eight hits, six for extra bases, in just three innings of work.
The Sounds continue their homestand on Monday night when they welcome the Albuquerque Isotopes to town for the 7:05pm opener of a four-game series. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (7-5, 4.74) will man the bump for Nashville in Monday’s opener to face Albuquerque right-hander Seth Etherton (3-2, 4.89).
