The Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education fulfilled the second part of their mission today at Austin Peay State University’s Hispanic Cultural Center when H.O.P.E. Director Pastor Tommy Vallejos & President Elizabeth Valdez-Adamski awarded a $500 Juan Vasquez scholarship to Sophomore Myra DeCaba. Myra is studying International Business with a goal of entering the banking industry. She is a member of the Hispanic Cultural Center, The Latina Student Association. and several other honor societies.
Victor Felts, Director of Student Life and Leadership was on hand for the presentation, āWe’re very excited that the H.O.P.E. Scholarship is being offered to one of our students.ā he said, āMyra is very deserving of this award, and we are very proud of her.ā Myra selected was from a pool of over one hundred applicants. Among the criteria used was the students G.P.A, their community involvement, and participation in different activities.
The scholarship is a life long dream of H.O.P.E and it’s founder Juan Julian Vazquez. āWe are very fortunate and delighted that we are able to follow through with our dream giving a deserving student this scholarshipā President Elizabeth Valdez-Adamski said, āMyra really stood out from the crowd.ā
H.O.P.E will be awarding three more scholarships in the near future. Their hope is that by awarding these scholarships it will encourage more Hispanic Students to attend APSU. Currently 656 Hispanic students attended this semester, which was a new record.?
