The Fourth Annual Spring Dance Concert is returning to Austin Peay State University this month, giving students and faculty the opportunity to present their choreography to the Clarksville community.
The concert is scheduled for five performances: 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 24; 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 25; 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 26; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27; and 2 p.m., Sunday, March 28. All five shows will take place in the Trahern Theatre on APSU’s main campus.
The cost is $5 for students, $10 for adults, and tickets can be purchased at the Box Office, located in the Trahern Building.
“The concert will feature all different types of dance,” Assistant Professor of Dance Marcus Hayes said. “It’s a mixed bill, with ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary. It’s kind of across the board.”In December, dance students presented their choreography work to a judge from outside the University. The judge gave each of the students feedback and then chose 12 student pieces to be included in the spring concert.
“Because of that process, the work is stronger,” Hayes said. “The student work is stronger. It’s good.”
Hayes also said the art of dance is currently on an “upswing” in popular culture, thanks to television shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance,” Clarksville’s own “Dancing with the Stars“, & other popular dancing programs. He sees the spring concert as an opportunity for area residents to watch talented dancers perform live during an hour and a half show at APSU.
“I think that people are very interested in dance and curious about dance, and that’s always exciting,” he said.
